former President of the United States
. It is dated July 22, 1955 when he was newly retired from the Presidency.
The letter says:
"Dear Governor:
I am very sorry for the delay in answering your good letter of May 26th.  In the rush to meet the June 30th deadline for my book, your letter mistakenly became part of the huge stack of correspondence the acknowledgement of which I was forced to postpone. It has just now come to the top, and I hasten to thank you for your thoughtfulness in inviting me to attend the Fall Rally of Young Democrats in Alabama.
Nothing would please me more than to be able to be with you, but my calendar for this fall is already so full that I am not in a position to make any further commitments. I regret it more than I can say.
