The words were removed from a handwritten letter Washington wrote to his nephew Bushrod on February 10th, 1796. Busy with figuring out how to tactfully leave the highest office in the land, Washington sought Bushrod's help in dispensing the estate of Colonel Thomas Colvill. Washington would request James Madison to begin to help write his iconic farewell address just 3 months after sending this letter.
