    HARRY S TRUMAN~
    (1884-1972),  Served as the nation's 33rd President (1945-1953)
    , had previously served as
    U.S. Senator from Missouri
, his home state, from 1935-1945. Truman had distinguished himself during his second term with his chairmanship of a committee investigating war profiteering. At the Democratic National Convention in 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt selected Truman as his running mate in his successful bid for a fourth term. Truman, who
succeeded to the Presidency upon FDR's death in April 1945
, brought about a swift end to WWII, increased the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour and
laid the cornerstones of US Cold War policy: the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the policy of containment
. In his second term, secured by a surprising upset victory over Republican Thomas E. Deway, Truman extended Social Security benefits to include approximately 10 million additional people and ordered U.S. forces into action when North Korean troops invaded American-supported South Korea (1950).
