WILLIAM MCKINLEY
.  Important partly-printed vellum document signed by “William McKinley” as President and countersigned by “Russel A. Alger” as Secretary of War.  President McKinley appoints Medal of Honor recipient William M. Wherry as “Brigadier General in the service of the United States”.  As a first lieutenant in the Reserve Missouri Infantry, Wherry received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861 with an official citation as such: “Displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire”.  He later commanded the 2nd Infantry during the Spanish-American War.

The document is one page with a blue war office seal affixed to lower left corner, measures 19.75” by 15.75”, created in Washington, DC on January 13, 1899, in overall fine condition, and authenticated by RR Auction, the leading autograph auction house in the world.  An exceptionally uncommon McKinley signed military appointment enhanced by its association with a Medal of Honor recipient.
